The University of Plovdiv ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ was founded in 1961 as a Higher Institute of Pedagogy for Natural Sciences and Mathematics. It received its university status in 1972 and is the second biggest higher school in Bulgaria. Prestigious and well-known, the institution offers leading education in the fields of Social and Human Sciences. Part of the university are a publishing house, modern laboratories, a sports centre, a student theatre and many other facilities that ensure the high quality of the students’ trainings.

The University of Plovdiv is divided into 9 faculties – Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Faculty of Pedagogy, Faculty of Psysics and Technology, Faculty of Philology, Faculty of History and Philosophy, Faculty of Chemistry and Faculty of Law. It offers over 60 different bachelor, master and PhD programmes. All foreign students who wish to apply for one of them shall take part in a foundation year. The fee for the preparatory course in Bulgarian language is 3000 EUR. After passing the course, students may choose a major and enroll for the following year. Nonetheless, the University of Plovdiv offer a master degree taught completely in English as well.
