The American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) was established in 1991 as a privetely funded, non-profit higher school. It was the first liberal arts institution and a pioneer in the American-style education not only in Bulgaria but in the whole eastern part of Europe. The institution is accredited both in the US by NEASC and in Europe by NEAA. Therefore, AUBG provides its students with the unique opportunity to receive US education in Bulgaria and to obtain international diplomas (US and European). Moreover, the university stands out with the impressive rate of 99.8% of its alumni employed only a few months after graduation.
AUBG follows the so-called liberal arts education system. Pupular in America and proven extremely effective, the system allows studens to choose the minor, the major and the concentration they wish. To put this in simple words, everyone has the freedom to list the areas of study he is interested in (for example business, economics, science etc.) and to add a major after the first year. Within the major and the concentration, students are gaining in-depth knowledge about a certain subject thus becoming professionals with a wide outlook and specific skills in a certain area.
The whole education at AUBG is delivered completely in English. Below is a brief list of some of the majors and minors students can choose from.

The univeristy is located in one of the most amiable cities for students – Blagoevgrad. Close to the capital city of Sofia, to the Greek and Macedonian borders and to a few ski resorts, Blagoevgrad provides many opportunities for the foreign students it welcomes. The living costs there are quite low both for Bulgaria and for Europe. Nonetheless, the city has a lot to offer – international restaurants, pleasant parks and walking streets and a friendly atmosphere.
